Commissioner James Gordon is the Top Cop

Calling all cars! Calling all cars! This is a 2319! James Gordon has beaten Green Lantern Hal Jordan and is officially the Top Cop.

This entire bracket came from an email of suggestions from friend of the show Tom. Originally titled The Legendary Lawman, the idea was to bring together different law enforcers from all over media to determine which was the "best".

After some consideration, we realized that there were far too many TV cops to keep the bracket manageable, so we limited the scope specifically to cops who have appeared on film. That meant as long as the cop was on film at one time, no matter where he or she originated, that cop would be eligible.

Commissioner Jim Gordon was one of a few favorites during the bracket along with lethal weapon Martin Riggs, lawman of tomorrow Robocop, and American cowboy John McClane. In the early rounds, Gordon made quick work of Rama from The Raid, Clarice Sterling from Silence of the Lambs, and Rick Deckard from the Bladerunner films.

Gordon also quite handily defeated John McClane. The logic behind that choice seemed to revolve around the Die Hard movie's lack of any real police work. In fact, when Die Hard with a Vengeance begins, McClane has been suspended from the force. So yeah. Not great.

Surprisingly, Gordon's last opponent was none other than Hal Jordan himself a.k.a. the original Green Lantern. Jordan had originated in what was designated the "easy side of the bracket" defeating characters like Mr Orange, Dick Tracy, and Larvelle Jones from the Police Academy movies. The voters chose Gordon over Jordan for a few reasons.

  • Jordan is a decent superhero but a pretty miserable space cop.
  • Gordon has better movies than Jordan.
  • Hal Jordan once went crazy and killed the rest of the Green Lanterns.
  • Mustaches are "in" right now.
And with that victory, Jim Gordon won the bracket. He is a pretty solid choice. Gordon has been a main player in the DC comic universe for more than 75 years. He is the only honest cop in one of the corrupt cities in all of fiction. Most importantly, he is the only person with the good sense to not send every single member of the police force into the subway during a citywide emergency.

Also, he knows Batman, which is pretty helpful.

Also, he was Batman for a little bit and he did alright.
