The Nickest Toon Sweet Sixteen

You know the drill. We had sixteen match ups in the first round of our Nickest Toon bracket. Half of the field has been eliminated. There are some huge upsets in this week's results as well as some clear developing trends. Here are the results from the first round.

Classic
Thomas "Tommy" Pickles (Rugrats) vs 16 Nigel Archibald Thronberry (The Wild Thronberrys)
Moquito "Skeeter" Valentine (Doug) vs 15 Cat (Catdog)
Douglas Yancie Funnie (Doug) vs 14 Dog (Catdog)
Angelica Pickles (Rugrats) vs 13 Ickis (Aaahh!!! Real Monsters)
Stimpson "Stimpy" J. Cat (Ren and Stimpy) vs 12 Daggett Doofus Beaver (The Angry Beavers)
Ren Höek (Ren and Stimpy) vs 11 Norbert Foster Beaver (The Angry Beavers)
Chuckie Finster (Rugrats) vs 10 Arnold (Hey Arnold!)
8 Rocko (Rocko's Modern Life) vs 9 Helga G Pataki (Hey Arnold!)

Modern
Spongebob Squarepants (Spongebob Squarepants) vs 16 Aang (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
Patrick Starr (Spongebob Squarepants) vs 15 Danny Fenton (Danny Phantom)
Samuel "Squid" Dullard (Rocket Power) vs 14 XJ9 "Jenny" (My Life as a Teenage Robot)
Maurice "Twister" Rodriguez (Rocket Power) vs 13 Snap (Chalkzone)
Squidward Tentacles (Spongebob Squarepants) vs 12 Sheen Estevez (The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius)
Ginger Foutley (As Told By Ginger) vs 11 James Issac "Jimmy" Neutron (The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius)
Pelswick Eggbert (Pelswick) vs 10 Cosmo (The Fairly Odd Parents)
Zim (Invader Zim) vs 9 Timmy Turner (The Fairly Odd Parents)

So down goes Frazier. Spongebob getting defeated by Aang is clearly the upset of the bracket, possibly of all of the brackets. Aang was a low seed because his show was the most recent, but Spongebob was a heavy favorite going into this match and his losing opens up the Neoclassical bracket for a ton of upsets going forward.

Furthermore, many shows were completely eliminated this week. Lone champions from Danny Phantom, As Told By Ginger, Pelswick, Invader Zim, Chalkzone, Rocco's Modern Life and Ahhhh! Real Monsters, and The Wild Thornberrys all went down taking their show's representation in the bracket with them. On top of that, both Angry Beavers and both representatives from Doug were eliminated, taking both shows out of contention.

The prevailing trend this week seemed to favor supporting characters over mains. Arnold, Doug, and Spongebob lost but in Arnold and Spongebob's case, their friends lived on. Partick, Squidward, and Helga were all able to succeed where their friends were not. If this trend holds, the Nickest Toon will end up being one of the more colorful side characters as opposed to a more recognizable face.

Here are this week's match ups.
